RYAN THE SUBFORUMS SHOULD BE IN THIRD NORMAL FORM
THAT'S WHY YOU KEEP GETTING TOPICS THAT COULD BELONG IN MORE THAN ONE SUBFORUM
I CAN HELP YOU FIX THEM IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT |

Like five months ago, I was walking to my dorm and listening to Rockin' the Suburbs, and Losing Lisa came up. That was the first time I realized what a cop-out it was to rhyme "know" with "know"! |

The country version of Gin and Juice (although, it's really closer to bluegrass, I'd argue) was done by The Gourds. |

There was a Boys n tha Hood cover like that as well, only less twangy and more Donovan-y.
Also, might I suggest When Pigs Fly for the full out-of-genre experience? |

Ben Folds is playing with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra this Saturday, that's going to kick so much ass. I mean, "Selfless, Cold and Composed" with pretty Hollywood strings? "Philosophy" with a brass rhythm section!! I don't know if either of those things will happen but they better! |

ah! yes! while i agree it's awesome, i keep telling my brother it's totally not phish. he swears by it.
lately, i've been doing blues-folk covers of hard rock songs under the name "woody pop."
people say my version of gimme danger is pretty sexy!
they-they do! |

what was implied by that post, but not actually stated, was that i find the ben folds cover FRICKIN AWESOME and match (if not exceed) ryan's affection for out-of-genre cover songs. |

I don't know about The Gourds, but Oar did a country version as well. I'll throw it into my /audio/ dir in a bit. |

Awesome cover, I have to say!
On the subject of covers of Gin & Juice, does anyone who did the ska-punk cover of that song? I got it from a friend labeled as NOFX, but not only does it not sound like NOFX, but I own every one of their full lengths and (I believe) every EP that has been released on CD, and there is no trace of the song on any of the albums or EPs. I'm pretty anal when it comes to music organization, and leaving it labeled as NOFX when there is seemingly no evidence that they are responsible for the song burns me up inside. |

Searching on CDDB.com, Sublime supposedly has done a cover of it, so I guess it could be them? |

Is it ok to post in this pretty old thread just because I'd like to talk about how awesome out-of-genre covers are? Because I am doing so. I made a whole mix of them a while ago which is pretty awesome. Alt-country Stooges covers! French lounge Dead Kennedys covers! Billy Idol trying to turn "Heroin" by the Velvet Underground into early 90's club music and failing miserably! I can make copies for people who want them, or maybe just rip it and put it up on yousendit or something. If there's just one or two tracks that you'd want to check out, I still have some of the more hard to track down songs on my computer.
Courtesy of the 365 Days Project, here is a link to the seriously awesome high school marching band rendition of "Roundabout" by Yes I start things off with. |

SY's cover of "Superstar" is one of my favorite things in the world. |

Oh man, sweet! I can't get the mixes to play though on account of server-side errors. Is it possible to get a copy?
Also, I loved the 365 Days Project. It was so great! |

out of genre covers are not the best ever. When they succeed they are lots of fun and maybe even envelope pushing occasionally, but when they fail they fail hard. Like Travis Morrison's "What's your fantasy." That song makes my eyes bleed.
My favorite out of genre covers are generally people doing bob dylan songs. Because if a folk singer does a bob dylan song you just think "yeah, so?" but if guns and roses, the beatles, the byrds or jimi hendrix do it, it's super great.
Also, johnny cash. |

also speaking of marching band covers, here's a really amazing drum corps (I think it was U of Mass?) doing "Paranoid Android" by Radiohead

I will try and rip the copy I made for my own personal enjoyment, make it into a zip file, and put it up on yousendit for you and everyone else here to enjoy over the weekend, if that sounds good for everyone. If not, I suppose I could send copies, but I warn you that while I love sharing music, I'm pretty lazy when it comes to actually going and sending it via snail mail.
And yeah, 365 Days was pretty awesome, although I didn't find out about it until after it was almost done, and even to this day have not heard everything they had to offer. Otis Fodder's new thing comfort stand records is a pretty great potpouri of free music too, including the entire tape made by The Cheese Eating Band! |
