So I discovered a new beer last night.

This stuff's pretty good. The same company makes Exodus Porter which is one my favorites.

some of the best beer i've ever had is american: such as the one above (brewed in Georgia). Asheville also has some awesome locally brewed beer. There's one called Scout Stout that's microbrewed @ this old movie theater that functions as a bar. There's also Highland Brewing Company which makes some awesome beer.

America has the best beer in the world if you know where to look.

You see, I live in Texas. Yeah. These are the people I have to live with.

But whenever I think American, I think Bud and Miller and other such watery nasty grossness. I'll have to try this 'good' American beer you speak of.

I agree with Super Duper Girl. I also live in Texas, and most the beer we get down here is quite unpleasant.

the Southeast is a surprisingly good place for beer, specifically Asheville. I understand completely about the hating Bud/Miller/etc. That stuff's horrible. I was the same way until a few years ago when I discovered the good stuff.

Shana: how could you? after all beer has done for you! I'm pretty sure it's responsible for my conception, so I express my appreciation by drinking as much as I can.

I concur. American lager is horrible, and our stuff isn't much better. My favourite tipple is John Smith's, which is a wonderfully robust bitter. Mmmm.

i have to confess that i only recently acquired a taste for beer and so far i prefer lagers! i mean, guiness is great and all but i can't drink that all the time, it's like a desert beer! whereas carling and coors are cheap and i'm cheap so they are what i normally get at the bar. i don't really like most of the bitters i've had, i can stomach them but i'd really just prefer to get a cheap lager when i'm out getting a beer with the fellas.

maybe this summer when i've got a job and an income and a labor union organizer as a room mate i'll expand my beer horizons. but i'll be in pennsylvania so chances are i'll just end up drinking lots of yuengling.

i can totally understand how someone could not like beer! I find it impossible to believe that everyone else here actually ENJOYED their first beer. it tastes like bread soda, i tried to like it but just didn't and then eventually after drinking cheap cider for a few months i finally decided i wanted a beer and somehow had acquired the taste for it.

i think forcing yourself to like beer would be silly, but now that i like it i can understand why others find it so wonderful.

I hate beer itself.

I like Guinness and Bailey's because it makes me feel Irish.

I hate fruity drinks because I'm paying 5 extra bucks for a fruit-shake, at which I cant even taste the alcohol! WHAT THE HECK IS UP WITH THAT

But we are talking BEER here!

I totally LOVE Guinness (the person)!

Beer, though...I've tried it on several occasions and it just makes me feel sick to my stomach. (It was responsible for my conception, too, Corbie!)
That's not to say I don't drink! Cocktails (unweak ones!), shots, wine--all A-OK.

Bread soda is the best descriptor for beer, EVER, the baber.

I haven't had any beer for like 6 years, and even then it was maybe 2-3 times a year. Don't like the taste of the stuff, and I'd rather poison my innards with things I genuinely enjoy.

I'm just the same way. I'm partial to Stella Artois, but I generally don't love the taste of the stuff. I grew up drinking vodka and whiskey, and making the shift to beer in late university was weird and difficult.

I don't much care for lagers as a general rule, but I like the creamier and the ales. I know I'm gonna get crucified upside-down for this, but I actually do prefer beer British-style: warm and flat. When I was raised in Korea, I didn't drink a lot of the carbonated beverages as there are in abundance in Canada - I had the energy drinks, mineral and vitaminized water and fruit soft-drinks, so the carbonation even in Coke and stuff kinda gets to me. I do like the way that certain beers taste with certain foods, but as a general rule I find that they don't go particularly well with cigarettes. Me, I'm a red wine and port kinda kid, but I also love a good single malt.

But apparently all my university friends defected to beer, and it's so much cheaper at bars.

Australia does amazing beer, guys. We don't just make Fosters! (which I find crap)

May I recommend:

James Boag Premium
Cascade Premium Lager
Hahn Premium
Coopers Sparkling Ale

We have awesome boutique stuff too, but I doubt you'd be able to get it over there....

I don't normally drink beer, because usually I don't like it. However I have found some exceptions:

Lakeport($24 for a 24)
Rickard's Red(I had a glass of this last night, because the boss took everyone out for drinks)
Labatt Blue

I've got a bottle of Lakeport honey brown that I've got to try, but that would get categorized under Lakeport anyway.

Well I must say that I've developed a taste for beer relatively recently, so I can understand people who don't like it (Even more so if they live in the US... the only american beer I care for is Samuel Adams).
I had a Leffe a few hours ago though, and I enjoyed every sip.

Aha, Leffe is good, I agree, as is... I forget its name, but it's also German. It's something like Warsteiner, I think. It's hard for me to find places that carry those though because I don't go to many bars, because I live nowhere.

I tried some stuff tonight called Hoegaarden, which advertised itself as a "white beer". Intrigued, I gave it a try. It tasted rather fruity - like it was trying to bridge the gap betwixt beer and cider - but was a bit too odd to become part of my regular drinking arsenal. It is a sometimes pint!

My theory is this:

No one actually likes the taste of beer, but they pretend to to seem cooler than people who admit to not liking it.

It's one of those aquired taste things. I agree you'd have to be really stange to enjoy your very first beer. Like cigarettes, I suppose. But without all that pesky lung cancer.
