No, no. It's lesbianism, Shana. Don't argue with me, I'm a public notary. All I say becomes true.
Why does "ass" have such a negative connotation in your language? What have asses done!? |

sometimes it can be good? But mostly it's just ass. |
The difference there is that it's author-sanctioned.
And Eidam, asses crap all over everything. |

Fan fiction is also a way for people to show their appreciation for something they really like a lot. It lets them interact with characters in a way that they otherwise couldn't. I don't think it's necessarily about exploring other plot lines -- I think it's about trying to identify more strongly with a work of art and exerting some form of ownership over an all-consuming passion. Having said that, I can think of absolutely no reason why anybody would ever want to read fan fiction. Except for the lesbianism, I suppose.
Also, I don't think it's really relevant whether the author sanctions derivative works or not. I think they should be judged on their own merits, regardless of what the original author thought about them. I suspect that the difference between guest scripts and fan fiction is more that guest scripts are written by experienced professional writers and fan fiction is written by obsessed fans who couldn't tell an interesting story if their lives depended on it. |

Well, most popular TV series spawn multiple terrible pulp novels that are scarcely better than fan-fiction. Buffy is a prime example (although Pretty Maids All In A Row wasn't too bad). |

Man, I'd write fan-fic for Saint Seiya (or Futurama) if they aired it again if I did. And I may take the effort of not adding (a lot of) lesbianism. |

I agree with Boorishly...
and Eidam, ass is just about the best adjective in the world. Of course it's negative. When it's a noun, then it can be good or bad. |

I couldn't agree more.

Well, maybe it's not (just) that. A guest script is published with the permission and endorsement of the original author: So, essentialy, the creator of the work encourages you to see it in another way, one presented by another person, and in that way that person shares the connection between the writer and his readers.
Fan fiction, however... Well, in my opinion, the person writing it is just doing it for himself: To demonstrate the way he, and he alone, thinks the original work could (or should) be.
Now, that may prove worthwhile, or it may not (and it usually doesn't).
Doesn't matter though, cause fan fiction may just be the only kind of fiction that serves its purpose just by being written; making the writer feel good about himself.
That's why I don't feel like I have to read it!
Anyway, here's a cute ass I had the pleasure of taking a picture of:
His name is Menios! |

Well, the poor thing hurts when you take them out, so it's a pain in the ass, mostly...
... You led me right into saying that, didn't you?
Also: I'm sure you realize that "You've got a nice ass, Faid!"-shana now has a 99.99 chance of eventually appearing as a random bottom-page quote... |

TOPIC CHANGE
DYKT Splinter in the Mind's eye is still Star Wars episode 4.5? Not Foster's best work, but it does fit into the continuity.
That, and the Christmas Special, are the most neglected Star Wars triviums around. |

Christmas Special was pretty solid, all in all. Although I've never seen it, it suffices the need of wookies latent in all the trilogy. |

Books that claim to be fiction, but are actually thinly-veiled philisophical manifestos!

Um... isn't most good fiction kind of like that? Or at least it's pretty common! |

1. Yes
2. Certainly that's an added bonus! I didn't think of that when I typed it, though I was feeling pretty nefarious! |

Well, I guess my gripe is really the "thinly veiled" part.
And it's one thing if, as in the case of Dostoyevsky, a philosophy reveals itself THROUGH the text.
It's something quite different if, as in the case of Rand, your characters spend the whole book talking about how awesome capitalism is. |

I'm reading the Fountainhead right now.
Just thought I'd throw that out there. |

Anything like Encyclopedia Brown.
The author's pedantic, and/or dead wrong 80% of the time.
The characters are worse. |
