As for the picture you posted, the shoulders look broad, but I'd have to see the original picture to confirm. |

like i said i drew it from life

also i like the linear shading style you've got going now
but if you want to get into blending with pencils more i would recommend getting your hands on a tortillon
it's just tightly wound sticks of paper but they're super cheap and super $$$ |

Man gastrodon just a while ago I was thinking to myself "Well, the shoulders are huge, but the neck and hair and stuff is pretty well-rendered (at least in thumbnail)"
Dang. Anyway, I'm glad I'm progressing. |

ysqure you are one curious cat
you say you want honesty, but then when you get it sometimes you get mad or defend yourself
or just impale yourself with self-loathing
i think you just want to be instantly amazing at art and have all of us compliment you?
cuz who doesn't want that? |

Okay I think that last post came across wrong
I'm not really angry, I'm just flustered that the part I thought was good is bad and vice versa
It's... kind of silly? I don't know.
But, um. In reality I'm quite glad that you let me know what I've done incorrectly, especially since I'm actually more-or-less satisfied with how the piece turned out, except for the problems identified. |

I think the head is still too small but not as too small as I usually draw heads?

the elbow/arm joint is a little off but nothing too horrible sticks out at me from this one.
I mean there are obviously a lot of things that are wrong but I can't really pinpoint any of them so that is definitely an improvement! |

Cool! This drawing wasn't as large as the ones I've done earlier, and I didn't take as long, so that's probably why there are a bunch of little errors left in. |

I think the head is alright. I think it just looks a little small because the guy is leaning forward, so his body is taking up more area.
The eye's a little dark. The hair looks too close to the eye and too far from the ear.
Looks like a good figure, though. I would like to see you do some paintings. |

Eye would probably be lighter if I had some kind of precision eraser, probably. At one point, it was almost solid grey, though.
And you're right, the sideburns are misplaced.
I've never really considered doing any traditional painting. Mostly I've just worked with pencils and my tablet. |

Well um thanks yellowbus
Anyway re: gastrodon:
Yes, I did. Most of the drawings I've posted here have just been 72dpi scans, and so the relative sizes are proportional to their actual relative sizes. Most of those portraits I did took up a full page; this profile is ~2-3 inches high IRL. |

ysquire you are doing all the right things by practicing and practicing but
maybe instead of posting a new picture every week or so you should post something new every month
in between make sure to draw every every day
it's just that no matter how much you practice it's still going to take longer to get really good at it than you'd like it to take, and it seems like you're being really hard on yourself and getting discouraged
I don't mean that seeking out critique isn't useful but it just gets to a point where it's really hard to not get defensive or start making excuses when what you should be focusing on is just making your drawings without feeling like your progress is constantly being evaluated
less pressure more drawing etc
also that drawing from the whatever side of the brain book is good but you should get like a really good anatomy book like anatomy for the artist by sarah simblet and really study proportion and muscle structure so that you can begin to understand form and depth. |
