so i just read this and i must say that i'd rather
  • it ended in part three
  • there was no part 5
  • captain marvel was renamed captain dc comics
i liked it i guess but it didn't really strike me as amazing? is this one of the amazing comic books?

i kinda felt like all the bible stuff was ham-fisted and overplayed and probably could have gone without so much exposition (ala the bible crap in arkham asylum which was so deep and hidden that i didn't even get it until i read the endnotes). also it was dumb that superman spends a long time

hating wonder woman and then marrying her, i mean, he doesn't marry batman ever so what is this

i'd say it's a good comic book but not a good story but i guess that sounds like i think comic books are a lesser art form?

anyways did you guys read this, like this, hate this

I think this is one of those books where you're blown away if you have an encyclopedic knowledge of DC Comics but for everyone else it's just kinda "meh." There's even stuff I don't get, and I dedicated the bulk of my teens years to this stuff.

oh so it's fanservice

i guess this is one where reading every wikipedia entry doesn't help me much and maybe i should just graduate to comic book wikis

criticising a superhero comic book for being hamfisted is kind of unfair

also yeahhhh comics are basically a lower art form

90% sure Kingdom Come is just an excuse for Alex Ross to draw big pretty splash pages with a million superheroes on them.

also tyler, to answer your question yes this is meant to be one of the amazing comic books
i guess that's pretty valid since comic books do not have that many amazing things

other "amazing" comic books are things like the dark knight strikes again (which i found pretty underwhelming) and i guess the sandman? i never read the sandman past the first trade paperback since i couldn't stand the art at all so i don't really know

my favourite ever superhero story is arkham asylum: a serious house on serious earth
it's great because it investigates the characters from the dc mythos rather than basically hijacking them and taking them to extremes like in kingdom come and the dark knight strikes again
it is eerie and the symbolism is not too heavy handed most of the time plus dave mckean makes some totally friggin' wonderful paintings
definitely read it if you have not already

hey guys I also have the complete chronological marvel civil war. i mean like, i have the random comics from the main storylines that deal with the civil war books. should i bother reading them, or should i just read the main storyline? will i miss anything dearly important?

i have read it! it is one of the few comics that i actually own. i also own the dark knight returns, which is what i think you meant to write about. anyways i like them both. i also like superman: red son a lot, and marvel eternals when gaiman rewrote it. obviously i only read comic books to look cool and etc.

dark knight returns, right
i get them both mixed up although even though i didn't really love either the dark knight strikes again is so terrible and frank miller is so friggin' insane that it makes me love the dark knight returns

i only read the main civil war comics and couldn't figure out what the big deal was
my friend told me that i needed to read like every single supplemental comic to fully appreciate it but i was not convinced
the whole civil war thing pretty much made me very sad that apparently people can't write good superhero stories anymore

i haven't bought a superhero comic in maybe a year or so
i only read my cigarettey art comics nowadays and i could not be happier

sandman is so $$$$$

gastrodon, there are different artists for each story arc or whatever, so don't let the art in the first one turn you off

that's one thing that can be frustrating about the sandman series, tho, is that the art ranges from absolutely gorgeous "good heavens this is the most beautiful art i have seen in a comic book" to borderline-"OMFG WHY DO THEY LET THIS CHODE DRAW PROFESSIONALLY"

yeah i know, i'm just not at all compelled by the first book enough to even get to the end of it
i've tried like three times already
i just wish dave mckean would draw it all the time

the thing about civil war is while they were doing it Marvel was like "THERE WILL NEVER BE A RETCON OF THIS" and then right after it was over they retconned it all

although did they retcon it by having superman prime punch reality really hard? i don't know!

Crisis on Infinite Earths is also one of those storyarcs I know I'm supposed to DROOL over but really it just comes across as a jumbled mess to me and I didn't know or care enough about the various parallel universes to be deeply moved when their characters hit the chopping block.

I think the biggest challenge for the cape-n-tights gang is making stories that are self-contained, stuff that doesn't force readers to backlog fifty years to know what's happening. That's how the old superheroes did it during The Greatest Generation.

Pretty much the only legendary comics lived up to their hype for me were the Alan Moore ones.

watchmen does live up to the hype pretty well. it is a pretty great piece of literature that just happens to be illustrated and star dudes in tights etc

guys i recently read the "demon in a bottle" iron man storyline.

man. it was like...it was so earnestly trying to tackle this weighty issue, but it was almost as if they had a quota to meet of how many dudes in purple and orange spandex iron man had to pummel while saying witty quips/explaining what his armor is doing

Marvel has a time-honored tradition of making their heroes delicately explain the minutiae of their superabilities, while DC's more like "I LEARNED THIS FROM SPACE WIZARDS".
