I voted for Dave Smith in a local election mostly 'cause he has the same name as me. |

Also the same name as my dad, who ran for mayor in a September election, which was nice 'cause he didn't have to put up any signs. |

If this Dave Smith wins, you should all three show up on the first day of the term and claim you won. |

VOTED FOR MCCAIN DARNIT :(
Now all I can think of is that one Peanuts strip where Charlie Brown is describing this SUPER COMEBACK WIN by the home team in this one football game to Linus, and Linus was like "what about the other team?"
This is what describes and about most of the rest of the internet. |

Nope, he won, actually. At 92% of precincts reporting, he's at 58%.
Pretty surprised that nobody realized he is a serious retard who has run almost exclusively a smear campaign but whatever |

There's a sizable portion of the population who apparently believe those to be redeeming qualities in a candidate. |

Voted for Obama
We bought a bunch of beer (foreign & domestic) to drink after the election results.
Foreign if Mccain won
Domestic if Obama won.
We drank all the foreign beer a few hours later. |

I liked both of the candidates so much that it was hard for me to decide.
Basically I think that 90% of anti-McCain sentiment was just an extension of anti-Bush sentiment, which is a really unfair way to treat a guy. I thought that John McCain was a decent sort of guy, and even though I didn't agree with all of his policies, I thought he could have represented the nation admirably. I ended up voting for him because Minnesota was an ultra-blue state, so I didn't put much weight on the decision, and acted on my conservative upbringing.
Meanwhile, all of my conservative friends are mad about Obama winning, and it's not a fair way to treat a guy, because I don't think they ever gave him a chance in the first place. Too many card-carrying republicans I say. They didn't pay any attention to anything he said because according to them, it was "nothing but empty hype anyway." What the heck is that about, huh? Anyway, I'm glad that he won, because even though I don't agree with all of his policies, I admire his work ethic and his personality, and I think that he will do a lot to unite America and make other people like us more.
Thought about third-party voting, but I didn't do enough research. |

I went into this election leaning McCain, since I have always liked a lot of what he stands for. But most of what turned me off of McCain were things he did during the campaign. Partly I didn't like some of the policies he was emphasizing, and partly I didn't like some of the obvious rhetorical concessions he was making to "the base". (This was also true of Obama, but less so.)
Towards the very end of the campaign, I started to drift back towards McCain because I felt like it might be unfair to judge him on his campaign alone -- instead of taking into consideration all the other things he has done over 35 years. McCain has definitely made mistakes in his career, but if the election had been between McCain's record of public service and Obama's record of public service, I would have gone for McCain.
What ultimately sunk McCain for me though was just a few instances of bad judgment in what ought to be serious matters -- especially his veep pick -- and too many Bush-like rhetorical distortions. I don't really care about negative campaigns since I think presidents need to be able to mix it up and say harsh things sometimes, but I do care when a candidate for president tells me something that he knows is not true simply because people will like hearing it.
Anyway that is how my process of choosing how to vote went down. I have reservations about Obama, but I am hopeful about him overall and expect he will be a pretty good president. |

i voted a straight democrat ticket which i'm only kind of ashamed of because i don't honestly know anything about the republicans running for state legislature and corrupt dems are kind of common around here so i might have perpetuated that some.
but alaska reelected ted stevens to us senate so i don't feel too bad, at least philly's awful state senators have the good form to withdraw from the election when they're facing felony sentencing. |

Something bothers me about voting straight anything so I was really glad when I found out I liked the Republican candidate for the clerk of the circuit court. |

frankly I think that when a good man abandons his much-vaunted "character" as soon as it seems politically expedient, maybe he wasn't such a good man to begin with. |

watching mccain's speech the group i was with all decided that mccain never really wanted to win this election all that much. thinking back on it i think it's pretty clear, it was never about "McCain as an individual is the president this country needs in 2008" it was mostly just "McCain as an individual is the best choice available among likely republican candidates" so if he just had a 'take one for the team' mentality the whole time it would be kind of fitting. |

if he didn't want to win the election, why did he destroy his reputation with democrats and independents by running a ridiculously negative campaign? |

because he didn't really want to win the election so he didn't invest too much thought into making sure he was in charge of the election rather than a team of advisers who couldn't even agree on why he was the best candidate |

If it had been McCain versus almost any of the other democratic possibilities (especially Clinton) I'd have most likely voted McCain. Or that's what I thought before the campaigns really got into full swing. I agree with Boorishly that there's nothing inherently wrong with negative ads. But the McCain campaign ran really sleazy, lazy, stupid negative ads.

I think we learned some things about McCain in this election, but I also think that people are a lot more complicated than we like to think sometimes. McCain is probably both a pretty good guy, funny, cool and competent in a lot of ways and simultaneously weak and awful, hotheaded, and a seriously unbalanced jerk. The McCain we've seen lately is the real McCain, but so is the old McCain we remember (insofar as we aren't romanticizing our memories). |
