I don't know I guess he's really talented but I find him a little dated
I mean in a classy way but it's definitely really stylized which is of course valid but probably not the best way to learn figure anatomy
kind of like studying "how to draw manga" books to learn how to draw

Yeah I mean Loomis straight-up is like "This is the commonly accepted artistic/heroic figure, you'll see that realistic proportions are kind of dumpy" and so that's not exactly conducive to learning real anatomy.

yeah I like it a lot and as far as art books go it's not terribly expensive
it uses transparency overlays really well and is nicely written
no sentences like "watch how quickly the mother's hand grasps the teetering child"

yeah so in sideways stories from wayside school there was your token "artist" student in class. she was r. fast at drawing [her name was bebe i think] and she could draw like 12 ducks in an hour. and everyone knew she was an artist. and then one day louis, the recess guy, told her that maybe she should spend Quite A While on one drawing and see what happens.

i feel like you know what positions and basic expressions you want your people to have but don't stop there. i mean, i dont know how to "draw" the "learn2draw" way but this [which is the one i like]

Image

could you tons more detail.

on first glance i am like oh neato.
but then i look at the hands and they are interestingly drawn but have like no details in them. just mess around. buy a fine point black pen. [i use .2-.3, .3 if i'm mostly writing and doodle on the side, .2 is viceversa]

[microns, hi-tec-cs if you're lucky, zebras, zig, foray gel in .5 is excellent imo -- not the clickytop]

should be like two bucks for one pen. basically use the pen on top of the pencilmarks to trace etc etc. and don't forget to include like little details on the hand that make them pop out.

it's better than some of his earlier stuff.

so ys3, i mean....well...

i think you should keep working on portraits and shading and whatnot but then, i'm pretty biased towards portraits.

not a huge fan of the helicopter is what i am saying.

It STILL seems to me that you are struggling with the shading. if you have a piece of tissue--use it. get rid of those hatch marks (or whatever). smooth that junk out.

If you have no tissue, then use one of those fancy shading stumps. i mean, everyone has those right?

Just wanted to say I am pretty absolutely sure that all how to draw manga books were basically made to masturbate to.

Cash grab?

Anyway thanks for the advice re: poorly-constructed helicopter and unblended shading.
