also i know there is a thread dedicated to her in the music forum but i think this is a good place to talk about her too... i think one of the bands she is most like is Fiery Furnaces. In that she is really good at creating really pop elements and rapidly shifting gears to another really pop element, and having pretty crazy musical interludes in between. She is a lot more classical (in every sense) than the Fiery Furnaces, and I think she is a lot more successful, but I also think there is a distinct similarity at least in how she structures her songs. |
hey baber I just read this like a month late
but still
:(
also baber are you going to come to nyc on the 28th because animal collective is having a listening party for their new album I don't know I heard you're kind of into them anyway you can check it out by emailing merriweatherpostpavilion@gmail.com with an RSVP
it's on like a tuesday though |
no way i'm going to nyc on the 28th, i'm sure i'll love the new animal collective album next year but hell i got bills to pay and also animal collective was one of the worst live bands i've ever seen, so just watching those dudes sit around can't be that much better.
also why did i make you frown. |

I like the concept of a band giving a listening party. It's like watching Bobby Flay eat for 90 minutes. |

baber I thought animal collective put on a pretty exciting live show so I don't really know what your deal is but
I was sad because I thought you were making fun of me re: making vague associations between Joanna Newsom and the structural stylings of fiery furnaces |

I should have been paying attention to this thread.
I didn't even know Ladytron had a fourth album now, and I recommended them.
Anyways, without hearing it, I can probably say I agree with Boorishly. They do lean towards being undemanding and repetitive.
Do they still do the thing where one girl sings a line melodically while the other gives it a spoken word treatment as some sort of transformative echo?
It's actually a really cool idea, but there was enough of it on 604 that they should have abandoned it afterwards. |

i didn't know you made those associations before, i was being real (except i think joanna newsom does successfully what fiery furnaces do experimentally and with mixed results at best).
also, with regards to animal collective, when i saw them play they did mostly brand new songs (this was the week before strawberry jam came out) and they also mostly did the long, slow, jam-ish songs that are by far their weakest elements (although 'we tigers' was a little fun to watch). It was also in a venue i hate surrounded by teenagers who viewed them as sex objects (wtf) and they had skeleton props that clearly were hooked up to moving parts but never moved, so total let down.
ultimately tho i think most of what i appreciate about animal collective doesn't translate well to live music, as the loose, free-wheeling feel of the albums doesn't translate as well into a live show. |

I don't really remember how to do this but what the heck here's a double feature.
Artist: Amanda Palmer
Album: Who Killed Amanda Palmer?
Boorishly sez: So I guess this lady is in a band called the Dresden Dolls, which I have heard of but don't know anything about. I like that she has some songs with guitars and some with pianos, because I enjoy a bit of variety. She also sings some pretty rockin songs and some slow serious ones. Probably I would say there are one or two too many serious piano ballads, because they start to all sound the same towards the end of the album. But the first half of the album I think is great, and the second half is not bad either.
Grade: B+
Artist: The Duhks
Album: Fast Paced World
Boorishly sez: I guess this is some sort of poppy bluesy kind of thing, and mostly it sounds pretty cool. But it doesn't sound like real blues -- it sounds like John Mellencamp covering the blues. Which is not bad, I just don't want anybody to get the wrong idea here. Anyway, I like the songs about hurricanes and ships and stuff, but they do get a bit boring in the middle of the album with a lot of forgettable songs. (Again a lot like John Mellencamp there.) They also have a few songs in other languages, but mostly they sound like the kind of inoffensive stuff you would here playing in the background at World Market. (Sorry if I used that joke before -- can't remember if I was saving it for this one or if I already said it.) It's a decent album and mostly likeable but nothing too amazing.
Grade: C+ |

So, um, has anybody listened to the cover songs on Green Day's new album? If so, how are they? I'm asking in this thread because I don't really feel like making a new thread for this. |
