Everyday before I write anything I always listen to Ima Robot's "What are we made of?" because I am insane and write crazy things.

What are cool bands that get you in the mood to do things?

depends.

i listen to "Napoleon Solo" by At the Drive-in a lot. it's one of those tunes i can't get out of my head. it gets me in the mood to go out and be productive... either that or to go out and hit up a bar.

I listen to Chad Van Gaalen when I want to WEEP WITH HAPPINESS. For most other things, something by Mike Patton usually satisfies.

I'd just like to say i'm thrilled by the Zappaism that's been emerging lately.

I heart Zappa so hard. I too listed to him when I need to mellow out.

Also, there's something about Guns and Roses' Civil War that just makes me really thoughtful. It's one of a select few G&R songs I like, I find most of their work to be really meh-y.

I listen to Lyle Lovett when I want to know it's okay to be sad.

You know I've NEVER heard any Zappa. Maybe you guys could reccommend me some songs.

I listen to The Pillows a lot to think of my girlfriend, but they don't do to many love songs. They're a J-rock band

I suggest "Hybrid Rainbows" "I think I can" "She is perfect" and "Little Busters" but all their songs are pretty good.

Whenever I write comics I listen to crazy music like Pink Floyd or silly rap.

Lyle Lovett's music is too happy for me. Too much in the major key.

my sad music tends to be Alice in Chains... either that or i play televators on my guitar. singing that tune is such great release.

Say Anything's "Alive with the Glory of Love" always puts me in an 'up and go' attitude, its pretty awesome and just so full of energy.

Also The Used "Taste of Ink" can do it to me upright every day at anytime, it's pretty pretty awesome, to me.

"We Are Not Alone" is a fantastic instrumental, "Zomby Woof" is a great song (there's a ton of different versions, too), and "The Torture Never STops" features Captain Beefheart on vocals. try those.

Zomby Woof is a good example if you want something that characterizes Zappa's style. But it's hardly one of his best works. Another great instrumental is "It Must Be a Camel". I'd also reccomend "My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama".

Depends on the kind of things.... Twisted Evil

Seriously, depending on the mood (work, lovin', plain chill-out), a lot have worked for me:
From old Dire Straits to James, to Camel, to Porcupine tree, to Galexico and back to Pink Cream 69...

The Gumbo Variations and Peaches en Regalia are two of my favourite Zappa tracks. For some reason I lean towards his non-vocal stuff more.

see, that's the thing. i'm not sure... but a squarepusher video would certainly have to include a toaster with, like, five forks jammed into it... all arcing with electricity and shit.

The Pillows are fantastic! I've liked them ever since watching FLCL (imagine that)! I would also recommend The Brilliant Green, if you like J-rock and haven't heard them yet, but I bet you have.

I'm on a huge Cake kick right now. I think they're probably my favorite group because their music is awesome and their lyrics paint extraordinary pictures. I can't say enough about how beautifully they communicate images. They're my "every mood" band.

I have to say that the coolest thing about Frank Zappa is that he named his daughter "Moon Unit." Dweezil's a preetty amusing name too.

I've also heard that he didn't use drugs! I don't know if it's true, though. His other kid's names were Ahmet and Diva.

Dweezil was named after Zappa's wife's little toe, which makes it even cooler.

And yeah, he didn't use drugs, though the people he worked with often did. He was a pretty idealogical bastard, in his day. I don't agree with a lot of it, but it's nice to know there's an intelligent person behind the music.

He was a funny man, too. Many of his live recordings are hilarious.

In other news: Frank Zappa jacks a thread about Ima Robot.

I love Ima Robot AND Frank Zappa, so it's all good for me. My dad likes to say "Gag Me With A Spoon" a lot. (I've been talking about my parents a lot lately. Uncomfortably so!)

Anyways, Playground Love, by Air is nice when I'm feeling mellow and what not, and Debaser, by the Pixies is good when I'm all hopped up on fructose. And Beautiful by Belle and Sebastian is good for when I'm crying. Belle and Sebastian generally makes me cry a lot.

?????
I can't imagine Belle and Sebastian has making me cry. Although "We Rule the School" is such a wonderful piece of music, isn't it?
For me, Bjork is the best mood music.

The lyrics to Beautiful is about letting a girl go blind.

It's depressing!

I always thought that song was kind of creepy, and Frank Black is an acrobat when it comes to vocals. My favourite might be "Here Comes Your Man". What a fantastic tune.

I saw Frank Black and the Catholics for $12 on my 21st birthday (this was 2 years ago, before the reunion). He's less of an acrobat without the harmonies, but still nice. they played all kinds of wicked Pixies tunes too, and most of Dog in the Sand. they played Wave of Mutilation, Gouge Away, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Here Comes Your Man.

I would kill to see the Pixies. Actually, maybe not really. But I would walk to Toronto or New York or whatever.
