I hadn't been around much for a while, but my parent-slash-bosses are in Greece for two weeks, so I can get away with posting more from work. |

Why would anyone want to spend two weeks in Greece in May? |

My sister is actually in a repertory theater troupe which for the past eight months has been travelling the state performing either Alice in Wonderland or Oedipus Rex. They are now taking the latter production on a four-week tour of your homeland.
And since I'm sure their audience consists entirely of tourists, the real question is: Why would anyone want to go to Greece to watch American college students perform Greek theater? |

No, the REAL question is "Why haven't you told me when and where they're performing yet". |

Then I guess the real answer is "Because I don't have the itinerary and really I looked all over the Internet and everything but I just couldn't find it anywhere."
If you happen to hear about any theater festivals going on, they are the Gainesville Theatre Alliance Repertory Company, and my sister is playing Jocasta. That's pretty much all I know, unfortunately. |

Normally this isn't the sort of thread I'd bother to write in, but since I just saw Octobites' avatar and was like, "Hey, I like Octobites' avatar, because really, who doesn't like Sun Wukong?" I thought I'd post here and say so. |

Kundor, in response to your avatar I must change my sig to distance myself from you politically.
edit:
and then he changes it to something else?
or it's on the random cycle?
anyway, he knows what I'm talking about. |

I was kind of disappointed 'cause right before he changed I had an awesome idea for an avatar for him. There'd be a pile of pictures of ladies with all the right hands cut out and a klaw cutting out the hand of another picture and there'd be a stack of cut out klaws in the corner next to some scotch tape and the caption is of course "PIXX PLZ".
Unless someone already did that. |

Nice "I want my work to be used to further the production of oppressive software which claims to own you, not the other way around" license there bud |

Much like Internet, I prefer to further all purposes.
But really, how can software itself be oppressive? Unless it was a driver for a USB jackboot or something.
One of the beauties of the DWTFYWTPL is that if you Wanted to, you could take all my code and relicense it as GPL or whatever. Now that's freedom. |

but the sheeple will say "durr i am going to stick with my vendor-locked-in crudware unless something totally ridiculous shakes me out of my hostage-data-enforced imprisonment; this totally awesome thing you programmed would have done it but since you DWTFYWTPL'd it my proprietary vendor just tossed it in their product"
Or: It is impossible for the advantages of free software to affect the market so long as proprietary software can freely benefit from it, by using and copying it at will, but free software can't use proprietary software at all. In such a situation, obviously proprietary software will remain at a state of the art equal to that of free software plus the benefit of extra time invested on their part.
Or: A one-way information flow (knowledge goes from FOSS to proprietary; nothing comes back) breaks cultural advancement models.
Or: It's just unfair. (And since the net runs on merit recognition, it's punitive to creators.)
Software is oppressive if it determines what you are and are not allowed to do with your computer, rather than the other way around; if it denies you knowledge of the workings of your own property; if it attempts to prevent you from using, storing, exchanging, and copying data as you see fit; especially if it attempts to do so beyond the restrictions allowed by law; if it obfuscates itself and its output in a manner intended to prevent you from using other software, and thus forcing you to either remain with a particular solution or throw away decades of information. Information is more vital to a modern intricate corporation than any other resource; the nature of software is politically and ethically more significant than many things which do have required disclosures under law. |

Oh, right. Duh. My bad.
Anyway, I'd rather have my code free completely and inspire freedom by example instead of by (many times ignored) legalese. I don't want my code used to further a political ideology, I just want it used.
Or, I would if I ever gained the courage to publish it. ;) I think Roast Beef said it best, "My code is a dog's code." |
