Non-stick pans like latch onto soap too. So much trouble just to cook at home. Screw this, I'm eating out forever |

Well, if you enjoy being slowly poisoned by your cookware, then by all means put it in the dishwasher |

the best is cast-iron skillets cuz you don't wash those, you heat them up real f'in hot and then just clean them with oil
of course you have to season them first :\ |

There are different non-stick technologies. Some are safe to use metal on and put in the dishwasher and some aren't. |

You don't put it in the dishwasher because it will start to remove the Teflon coating, you don't heat it past 400*f either because it will start to break down (chemically) and get into your food. |

If its not Teflon its something like Teflon so it could be worse or better depending on the conditions. |

just read the wikipedia article on teflon
this excerpt is amazing

| PTFE's resistance to van der Waals forces means that it is the only known surface to which a gecko cannot stick. |

I'm tempted to look up van der Waal. But I'm afraid it would ruin my initial conception of him being a Dutch general trying to reinitialise the Boer war with an army of geckos. |

van der Waals was a physicist who came up with a model for non-ideal systems
For example an ideal gas has particles of no extension in space and which do not interact. A van der Waals gas has particles which have a finite "size" (ie a vertical potential energy wall some radius from the particle: this makes them bounce off each other) and some attractive force ('van der Waals force') in a small region away from the particle. You can solve (i think??) the relevant equations of statistical mechanics for this gas which is pretty great! It is a pretty good approximation to a real gas.
Anyway a van der Waals force is just the attractive force between unbonded atoms or molecules. It's what makes solids not fall apart and geckos use van der Waals forces to stick to walls.
Anyway I think that's more interesting than the Boer war. More like the bore war amirite |

That attractive force thing is terribly neat.
But I maintain that the Boer war would be fascinating if fought by geckos. |

but I thought the Boers lost? I don't see how geckos could kill a boar unless enough of them piled on to suffocate it. |
