Not at all!
It's like the only chance for all the close family to spend any time together around the wedding.
The ceremony itself is usually way hectic, the bride & groom are mobbed, and there are lots of distant acquaintances who want to make small talk or shake booties, leaving no opportunity for the immediate families to exist together as two units...? if that makes any sense.
I've only been to the one for my brother, but aside from my own divorced parents making things awkward, it was a grand thing to have. |

In my country, and in my family, I believe rehearsal dinners should be between a man and a woman. |

P.S.: Maybe the reason it confuses people is the word "rehearsal" in the name. Yeah, nobody cares about that. It should just be called dinner. |

I went to one a month ago and it was pretty good because i met some of my sister's friends and her husband's family properly for the first time and also the priest and his wife came and they were nice people. Also the food was really good and then we went home and drank quality whiskey. |

Shandy, are you one of those people who go "Oh yeah, well I'd give anything to spend time with my father but HE'S DEAD" whenever someone bitches about their parents? |

I'm going to one of these things next month.
Are significant others of members of the wedding party usually allowed to go? |

i don't know if there are any set rules on who gets invited to the rehearsal dinner. it's usually people who are involved with the wedding, their significant others, and then maybe out of town guests who arrived early.
the size can vary from just close families to pretty much everyone who is going to the wedding.
i've been to quite a few of these things. it seems like they tend to be a preview of the overall tone of the wedding. if people get along okay there will be decent mingling chemistry at the wedding and it will be good times.
if there are awkward times at the dinner get ready for awkward times at the reception.
also i think it's sometimes called the groom's dinner? traditionally the groom's parents foot the bill so they kinda decide who is invited. |
