I don't think I'm the only person to think this up, but I hypothesize that if you remove all the text of Garfield's speech, or thoughts, or whatever that is, that it become an oddly surrealist comic.
To prove it I submit some examples.

That's pretty good!
Not as good as the Randomizer. But still pretty good! |

It adds yet another depressing layer to the pathetic existence that is Jon. |

Yeah, Rage, it's one thing talking to your witty cat all the time. But if it's just an ordinary cat you reach a whole new level of pathos. |

I'm amazed I've never seen this before! It's a brilliant idea and the results totally carry it. I like the angry Jon one too. |

"Angry Jon" cracked me up, but "Why Am I Not Happy?" really spoke to me on a deeper level. |

http://castlezzt.net has done that for years!
Also, he redesigned the page apparently, so I will look for a more direct link.
It seems that they have been removed. :(
But they used to be there, back when all the content was on a single page.
But one of the things that's so great about the experiment is that, if Garfield does speak in thought balloons only, that this version of the Garfield universe is the one that would be experienced by a real onlooker. It's pretty mind-boggling how close Jim Davis is to a good comic; all he has to do is stop making excuses for his characters' actions. |

Garfield, traditionally one of the worst comics ever, has become the greatest comic ever. I salute you, sir, for giving me a reason to live. |

Today's would work if Garfield's thought bubble didn't overlap with John's speech bubble. |

A lot of them are like that. It looks not-at-all-hard to fix. |

Wow. Minimalism as applied to pop art.
Note to self. Things are funnier when the characters don't ruin it by talking too much. |
