I think he actually actively hates the cast of Firefly, and is seeing how much he can mock them before the browncoats in his fanbase revolt. |

randall munroe should not do story arcs
they're even worse than his regular ones |

I dunno guys, xkcd is what it is. It's like those transgender fetish comics -- there's no art in it (there's a better word but I forget it), and yeah it's pretty technically terrible on every level, but it sort of doesn't matter because the entire point is fanservice. For fetish comics, it's sexual; for xkcd, it's geek fanservice. And whatever, I've totally laughed out loud at more than one comic. (Remember the random number generator one? That was funny.)
That said, yeah, this storyline is pretty much shit. GUYS IT'S AN ACTOR WHO CAN'T DISSOCIATE HIS FICTIONAL WORLD FROM THE REAL ONE HOW ORIGINAL AND FUNNY RITE? NO? OH WELL IT'S FIREFLY THOUGH. Meh. |

I disagree. The latest ones are that, pure lame fanservice references, but xkcd is occasionally something like a real comic. Most of the time it's more of a comic (even if it's dumb) than this current story arc. But this is just pure terrible. |

Craftsmanship! That's the word I was looking for.
There's no sense of craftsmanship.
Anyway, eh, it's pretty much always largely been geeky fanservice. It just used to be pretty consistently clever geeky fanservice. Nowadays it seems like he just phones it in three times a week, which is sad. At least with something like Questionable Content you get the idea that Jeph Jacques really is trying as hard as he can to make his comic good. Randall Munroe I'm pretty sure just asks his friends to name something geeky-nostalgic, draws some stick figures referencing it, goes hug IT THAT'S ALL I WANT TO DO and plays in his ballpit. |

If you ask me Jeph's problem is that he tries too hard (especially when it comes to drawing lips). |

I honestly can't express how much I hate the current storyline. And I like Firefly and Nathan Fillion a lot. I think this is finally enough to make me unsubscribe to the RSS feed. |

I saw the storyline referred to as a "meta-commentary on self-insertion fanfic" (Kris Straub's Twitter), which made me reread the week's strips... but... if that's what it is, I'm not seeing it.
(Though, Kris was possibly being ironic in that comment to begin with, I suppose.) |

Yeah, I saw that too but I don't see how just being a horrible self-insertion fanfic qualifies as commentary. |

I'm pretty sure Kris Straub has forgotten how to NOT be ironically detached. |

i enjoyed today's alt-text
(mostly because it's cute when detached from the storyline) |

guys I laughed at how terrible the ending of the storyline was. It was really terrible. From a dramatic standpoint, from a comedic standpoint, from lik every viewpoint imaginable. |

i would read that though
it would actually be about as clever as xkcd, although it would produce a more visceral reaction |

Also, to me the worst thing about xkcd had nothing to do with the comic or Randall. It's more that he has created a webcomic subgenre where people can draw horrible stuck figures and claim "you just don't get it" to anyone who calls them on it. |
