This week I read Batman: Year 100 by Paul Pope, which is a good look at Batman, IN THE FUTURE! It covers some of the same themes as The Dark Knight Returns, and even seems directly influenced by it in parts, but it's still very much its own book. It has a very cyberpunk feel to it, for lack of a better term. There's a big to-do about cyber-enhancements, government control of the populace, etc. Paul Pope's artwork is excellent, although it may take some getting used to. Overall I highly recommend it.

I also read Gotham Central: Volume 1, by Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka (art by Michael Lark), which is about regular (i.e., not Batman) policemen in Gotham. It's a really decent police procedural, and Batman shows up sometimes. I don't have much else to say about it. Pick it up if you can find it! It's pretty good.

Also! Here is a funny rundown of Neal Adams's insane Batman : Odyssey.

If I knew the word "motel" was going to lead to this derail, I would not have used it.

Anyway! Fanart!

Three items today!

First, actor Michael Gough, who played Alfred in the Burton/Schumacher Bat-flicks died this Thursday.

Second, Chris Sims lays down the best "deep cuts" of Batman.

Third, Chris Sims and the Let's Be Friends Again folks made some jokes about Batman action figures that you might like.

In today's Ask Chris, Sims compares Hamlet (the character) unfavorably to Batman. Also there are caveman shenanigans that loop back around to Batman somehow.

I just read the collected volume Batman vs. Robin, by Grant Morrison. It was really good! I look forward to where it goes from here.

Josh Pence to play Ra's al Ghul in flashbacks in the upcoming Batman movie? Could this be a sign of Talia fun-times?

Noted Batmantologist Chris Sims's corpse spotted in the preview for Batman Inc. #6! (Also in that preview, Bruce Wayne looking like a total creeper.)

In other news, Spider-man is said to be leaving "Turn off the Dark" and is to be replaced by Batman.

Scorpion Tango (issues 3-5)
Batman then travels to Argentina in an attempt to recruit El Gaucho into Batman Incorporated. Gaucho refuses wanting to be his own man. Gaucho informs Batman of a case involving three missing children and a link to a mysterious manipulative figure called Doctor Dedalus. On the trail of the three children Batman and El Gaucho are led into a death trap by El Sombrero and Scorpiana in which they must fight to the death to save the missing children.
Batman and El Gaucho escape the trap but both learn of Gauchos link to Kathy Kane the original Batwoman. Batwoman was hired by the 'unrepentant Nazi war criminal' and former superspy Doctor Dedalus to learn Batmans secret identity. However, Kane fell in love with Bruce Wayne after becoming Batwoman and left him. The new Batwoman Kate Kane learns of Dedalus's location in the Fakland islands where he was imprisoned by a team of British heroes claiming to have made a 'ring around the world' in the form of an unknown master plan.

this is going to be an odd video game

(if you haven't heard, it's Gotham City Imposters, a multiplayer online FPS. as you can see, everyone is either a batman or a joker.)

It seems there was a story arc in Detective Comics by David Hine that was made to promote this.

So I've been holding off posting these since I didn't know if you guys would be interested, but over at Comics Alliance senior Batmanologists Chris Sims and David Uzumeri are reviewing the Burton-Schumaker films in their new column, Remedial Batmanology. Basically it is two grade-A comics nerds slagging off the movies and making a bunch of nerdy jokes and having a good time. If you're familiar with their last effort, Smallvillains, this one is a lot like it.

Reviews so far:
Batman 1989, part one and part two.
Batman Returns, part one and part two.

i just finished part one of the Batman thing and

Quote:
Chris: Which isn't an entirely off-kilter or unprecedented take on the Joker, but... why? Why use the Joker for this, and show his origin when there's no change in the character? Hell, why use Batman, since he's virtually unrecognizable apart from the pointy ears? If this thing were, I don't know, Tim Burton's The Black Terror, it'd make a lot more sense. And no one would remember it.

is just so wrong

Napier is unbalanced, but the damage from the chemicals only changes his appearance - his psychological condition worsens as a result of the trauma, he isn't dunked in goop and given super crazy powers

at least that is my take on it, but i haven't watched this movie since 199x so

Oh, hey, those Remedial Batmanology guys I mentioned are on the first part of Batman Forever now. They are less down on it than you might think! Still pretty down on it though.
