I don't know that there's really a "reason" for it per se. I actually don't mind the technique myself. Trailers want to give you an impression of what's going on without actually showing too much, and they want to be exciting, so it's just a way to hint at an action or a scene and "get around the movie" (i.e. show lots of different stuff to add scope).
