Give that bird to holler without telling her about its training
And you know she's eventually going to put a felt hat on it

I like the idea behind MST3K a lot, and some of the jokes are funny, but honestly a lot of it just seems like random nonsense. I would probably like it more if it wasn't spontaneous, since I like the non-movie segments, or if they made fewer, better jokes. Plus I guess I have a really high tolerance for bad movies, and kind of like them in a way, so Manos: the Hands of Fate isn't really improved for me by the addition of unscripted snark.

The annoying thing is I like everything about it except the jokes. Especially the theme song, which may be the best non-instrumental TV theme I've heard.

I think the problem lies in coming to it as a 31 year old who never watched it before but has watched a lot of terrible old genre films and read a lot of well-written comedic articles and reviews on the subject thereof, the authors of which built the show up as far better than it could ever really be. I really wish I had seen it as a teenager.

iirc it's not spontaneous
they watch the movie once ahead of time and take notes for jokes they want to make
then they use the best stuff in the actual show

Very, very early episodes were spontaneous (some of the first ones with Joel), until they ran into a movie with an unexpected, unnecessarily violent rape/murder scene. After that, they pre-screened all the movies.

I was rewatching a few random episodes and I can sort of see where you're coming from, Tom. A good deal of them are not consistently, constantly funny, but most of them are good for an unexpected chuckle. When I was younger and it was all new to me, I was a lot more laugh-out-loud entertained than I am now. There will still be a few of them, though, that I laugh about no matter what.

As for how much all of this applies to the New MST3k... I could see where, if that was someone's only exposure to the show, they'd find it unfunny.

it's heavily scripted

i read an interesting take once about how mst3k is like you get to guilty enjoy "bad" movies without actually watching the "bad" movie. there's detachment there which allows you to not have to interact meaningfully with the film, made literal by the overlay of the mike/joel and the bots, and because you're not actually interacting with the film you get to keep your hands clean. it's like common people by pulp, when the movie's over and you get sick of genre trash, you can go back home and sleep at night knowing you weren't ever really watching the phantom planet. you were watching mst3k.

i dont agree with that take whatsoever but i think you might find it interesting tom.

also the best riffs are the ones for movies that are basically good already. or if not good then at least watchable. like manos is unwatchable both as a film and as a riff. space mutiny however or soultaker or final sacrifice or basically all of the japanese ones are great. i think the shorts land more in 2018 than the long form riffs and the mst3k netflix show is bad. i'm a mike fan who finds joel's interactions with the bots extremely cloying though, which is def a minority opinion. i vastly prefer most of rifftrax's outings to any episode from the netflix season.

the lost short, assignment venezuela, is so good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJY2S_brQbQ

I've come around to MST3K, but pretty much agree entirely with Zach, except that I don't get Future War because I don't like that kind of bad movie (the Jack Frost and Teenagers from Space episodes were great, though).

I tried to watch the reboot, and it was not very good. If you make an MST3K episode based around Star Crash, arguably the greatest bad movie ever made, and it is not only not funny, but makes the movie less enjoyable, you should probably reconsider some things. Which annoys me because I like Felicia Day and Patton Oswalt in the host segments.

Also I was watching the episode The Beginning of the End, and thinking abou t what would actually happen if a giant grasshopper attacked my house, and now I want a movie that is mostly about someone trying to convince everyone they are being attacked by a giant grasshopper, because they are too panicked to lie and say someone is being murdered,.

Idea: A detective type video game, or one where you often have conversations about complex topics. Really any sort of game where you feel pigeon-holed into saying things you disagree with because you disagree with it less than the other options.

There's an option during any choice in dialogue to select a frustration button. The button just randomizes your response so you can move on.

But at the end of the game it's like a personality quiz. It creates a psychological profile of you based off of your frustration responses, and in some way communicates that actually it really does understand you.

Columbo would actually make a pretty good game. It would be fun to play a detective game where it's more of a puzzle than a mystery, built around accruing enough evidence to get the obvious culprit to confess, with side elements like the parts of LA Noir where you have to trip people up when interrogating them (although, again, you would more or less know who did it and be trying to either confirm a suspicion or get supporting evidence). Also you could use "anecdote about Mrs. Columbo" and "I was talking to the chief" as power moves. And trying to manoeuvre all the characters into turning on one another could be great.

Also, every time you use the "Just one more thing..." ability, it increases both the interogatee's frustration and guilt, and if you misjudge it or rely upon it too much they get frustrated and throw you out of their office.

I never watched Agents of SHIELD, so if this is just that then never mind, but a good show might be a cop/SWAT type one about a police division in a major city that is dedicated to solving "powered" crimes and providing an armed tactical response to powered threats.

This idea came from this season of Jessica Jones, which has been pretty good, but which suggests that in a world in which a Norse god fought an armada of aliens in Manhattan, the police don't have holding cells capable of containing people with superhuman strength.

So I guess basically Patlabor, but instead of mech vs mech it is SWAT team vs Dr Octopus.

It is Batman before he became Batman, but just in the most recent season he has Discovered The Bat Within.
It's actually a pretty good show. It gives the origins of all the bad guys and Gordon and Alfred are both great.

That way having the actual superheroes you like in the show and having actual good demonstrations of superpowers cost as much as not having those things
