I have a physics question at the end of my chapter on light refraction and it wants me to write a paragraph on why maps of the moon are upside down. My best guess would be because telescopes would be all reversing images because of the convex lenses, but don't telescopes have something that would possibly flip these images upright (another lens)? Thoughts?

My Rand McNally moon map isn't upside-down. I don't know how official that is.

Please don't talk about moon maps. You are coming very close to revealing a mormon secret

That was my first thought, but I assume they mean you should be able to hold them upright as you have drawn it and have it appear upside down to th moon as seen through the naked eye?

I couldn't think of any other reason why they would be "upside-down" and also relating to optics, and I found this.

Quote:
Unlike astronomical telescopes, which give inverted (upside-down) and sometimes mirror-reversed images, binoculars show you right-side-up views that are never mirror-reversed, making comparison with the lunar map very easy. Once the map is oriented properly, you will be able to readily identify the major seas, craters, mountain ranges, and other features. In time the geography of this alien world will become as familiar to you as that of our own.

Sweet. So, I assume it must be something about when trying to see such a far distance away you can't have another lens to flip the image right-side up. Possibly something long those lines.

Also, apparently looking at the moon below the equator is upside down.

really the whole "upside-down" thing seems a bit tenuous

iirc the moon doesn't have magnetic poles or an axis of rotation, so maps can't be oriented to north anyway

of course the moon has an axis of rotation, it rotates.

Oh, yes, I was getting confused. I knew tidal forces between the earth and moon meant we saw the same side all the time, but didn't think it through.

astronomical telescopes show images upside down and mirrored is because they don't have a correcting lens or prism. You can get one, but they absorb a little bit of light, so it makes it harder to see faint things.

the correcting lenses are called erectors BTW and they go in front of the eyepiece.

what if you're on the equator and you look at the moon? which way up is it then?

:O
