This...this does not happen in the movie. Or the books. There are tracker jackers, which are regular-sized genetically engineered wasps that are highly aggressive and their venom causes hallucinations but...giant magic bees??

just saw Rubber

hope you guys saw it, cause i'm gonna mention stuff that would probably spoil the movie

anyway! it was decent! i had to get a few things about that movie off my chest, though

seemed like an interesting premise but i think it was a little too self-congratulatory for its own good

not to mention its entire mission statement at the beginning seemed sort of flawed
only E.T. being brown is something that was arguably for "no reason"
and even that seems like it could be explained?

anyway my kneejerk reaction to my reasoning is that it missed the point
hell, it's meant to be a happy "there is no point!!"
but it still manages to be ham-handed about it
it just doesn't work, cause even the ironic "it's supposed to fall apart" sense of it falls apart if you give any of this even a little bit of thought

and you will if you watch it, cause for a movie that's about a sentient killer tire
it manages to drag on like nobody's business

there were some really interesting ideas in the movie, even if they kinda seemed not-incredibly-original (always got the sense the first thing people think of is the fourth wall, especially with webcomics)
i liked watchin chad get sick of being in the movie and try to end it
and i think the way they did that is clever, but i think they knew it a little too well

anyway i know i'm harshing on it when i said it's decent
i guess mostly cause the beginning was straight-up fantastic

and you just want so so so bad to like it

actually webcomics is a good example

like powerup comics
and how some are still more enjoyable than others, just like all other entertainment?

someone like unwinder knew how to make bad enjoyable
something seriously awful

but it's not really enough to make it just bad
even though you're achieving what you set out to do
there's no real reason to be reading it if it's not entertaining
even though you could be like, "well it's not meant to be, that's the genius"

but really that's an excuse

anyway rubber kind of falls in the same logic
even if your goal is not to accomplish anything
at the end of the day, you're still trying to accomplish something
and rubber fucks up

I saw Persepolis. There were parts I didn't remember from the book, and parts missing that I did remember from the book. All in all a fine film, although there's not much I can think of to say beyond that.

For me, the beginning was so great it made my memory of the complete movie better. But you're right that it frequently drags on, waiting for something to happen. Fortunately it didn't bother me that much that they didn't always think all things through, and I would rate it one step higher than decent.

I watched A Woman Under the Influence. I had to pause it halfway through and go into the other room for twenty minutes to wind down. Then as I watched the second half I found myself clutching my head, thinking over and over again "Why won't it end? Oh god, please stop. No. Why? Why in God's name are they all so stupid? Please I hope it ends soon". I also started crying at one point.

Oh man, I saw Cabin in the Woods today. So good.

Everybody, go see The Cabin in the Woods before it is spoiled for you.

No, that's not quite the important part.

Go see The Cabin in the Woods before before your expectations for it get inflated or before word of mouth starts getting annoying and you feel obligated to hate it.

It's a pretty upsetting movie.

Still! Nine out of Ten! Tell your friends! This Peter Falk chap is the new Spencer Tracy!

I saw Pet Sematary for the first time. I'd never read the book, so it was only later that I found out what I initially took as "characters being idiots" was actually "magical addictive dirt". It actually bothers me more that there actually was an explanation for the whole "repeatedly burying things in zombifying cursed Indian burial grounds when you know what's gonna happen" thing in the book and the movie just didn't bother to get into it. Still, it was pretty entertaining, if not that scary.

Well, the dirt itself isn't addictive, that was just me being silly, but as I understood it there was something about the act of burying people there being addictive?

Okay. The book spends a long time describing the father going crazy with grief, so when he decides to bury his son it doesn't seem like he's stupid, just nuts.

Just got back from The Avengers. It was OK. The beginning was unbelievably bad, but it had some good moments. Make sure you stay after the credits.

I liked it!
It's actually the sum of its parts, which a lot of things are not.

The only thing I disliked about it was when I tried to go see The Raid and they had canceled it because they needed another theater for The Avengers. >:[

Drive. It was pretty terrible. The soundtrack was the shittiest soundtrack ever. That was my biggest problem. Second was the choice of font and color for the credits. I could also put something here about "acting" but I guess that's probably part of the whole "deal" and I actually liked how Ryan Gosling didn't act since that more or less makes sense re: his character, but everybody else come on.

I didn't think the soundtrack was that bad except for the song with the "real humain being/real hero" lyrics blasting over the climax and knocking me over the head like I must be some kind of fucking moron for even bothering to watch the movie.

maaaan the drive soundtrack is perfect. there is no other music that would make any sense for that movie. i wasn't crazy about it as a movie but it is a pretty impeccable exercise in style i think.

saw the avengers over the weekend and def liked it. agree with andrew that the beginning was shitty and dumb but after it gets going and things start blowing up it's super enjoyable. i had zero expectations via i hate mark ruffalo and robert downey jr's douchey beard, but then mark ruffalo stopped talking because he was the hulk and the hulk is pretty good, and robert downey jr is pretty funny. also space whales are dope. thor is dumb and hawkeye is dumb and nick fury is dumb. loki had some good lines but his costume was dumb. scarlett johansson is a pretty lady.

drive has been pretty polarizing among my groups of friends. i personally thought it was an impeccable movie for what it wanted to be, but it got lambasted by some folks.

my own qualm with the avengers is that the bad guy was never intimidating and i never felt the situation was out of hand for the heroes.

Everybody liked Drive so much, I had high hopes for it. And it turned out to be a decent movie, nothing more, nothing less.
But I have to say, I did really like the first 10 minutes or so (the chase scene).

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. An American movie set in Sweden, and the characters are speaking English with strong Swedish accents. That’s not really more realistic that them just speaking normal English.

Also during the opening credits there’s a song about vikings. Even though the movie isn’t about vikings, it’s just set in Sweden.

It’s like if somebody made a thriller set in the US and they start it with a song about cowboys.
