What are the currently airing shows (or shows with seasons/episodes released in the past year) that are part of the tv canon?

Seems like there are
1000 prestige shows around
And 1000 other shows
And 100000 reality show type things
But
Since there are 1002000 shows on 100 platforms
Not enough ppl can watch them regularly for them to
Become part of the tv canon
Iykwim

Are there any other shows that are
Canon enough that
You could assume someone irl would even know about them???
Are there any shows that you could actually talk about with anyone (not a friend) irl? Shows where both ppl have seen the latest episode? Shows that have had any cultural impact?

I have
Ideas about some shows that could be
TV canon
But I don't even own a tv so I can't tell

The only shows I have talked to strangers about in the past year have been Game Of Thrones and Nathan For You.

And Review, but that's just me telling everyone I've ever met how good it is.

I feel like Stranger Things might be one, even though it's Netflix exclusive.

Nielsen started tracking Netflix and apparently Stranger Thins 2 was viewed comparably to Game of Thrones and that was only counting TV views (so no laptops, tablets, etc) I’d say it’s fair to count it as canon.

I feel like "This is Us" and "The Good Doctor" are like, shows people talk about crying to.

irl the only shows I have heard normal people (i.e., not comic book nerds who watch all those Marvel shows) talking about within the past year are Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Stranger Things, and Bob's Burgers.

Oh and Ballers I guess. And various food travel shows. Oh and we saw a kid dressed up as Todd from Bojack Horseman in our neighborhood on Halloween, but I don't think that counts since she said only one other person knew who she was supposed to be.

I am leaving out dumb popular sitcoms since this was a question about prestige television. Like I know a million people who have watch the Big Bang Theory and Modern Family but that's not what you are asking I assume.

Having said all that, I also feel like maybe only 5% of the people I know actually watch Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, or Stranger Things. They just talk about them more than the other 5% who are watching The Great British Baking Show or whatever.

I don't know if I've ever heard anyone ever mention having seen even a single episode of Ballers. It seems like it would be really big, given the cast and premise etc.

But yeah I agree with the premise of this thread because kfunque is constantly watching these TV shows where not only have I never heard of them

but I don't even know where I would have to go to have heard about them.

I will throw Rick and Morty into this
And maybe Adventure Time
but I think maybe those, especially the latter, have to be within certain circles.

I think Adventure Time WAS more cannon but has find of fallen out of favor recently.
I don't watch very much tv (I've mostly been watching Sci-Fi series from the 90s & 2000s with my boyfriend lately, or kids shows with his kids) but I recognize Rick and Morty shit everywhere all the time and I've never seen the show, so it must be somewhat cannon?

Pretty sure this thread is like, mostly geek canon.

I'd agree with that.

It's because we're avoiding really obvious ones like Survivor or The Bachelor, if that's what you mean.

Stranger Things is a good show, but the soundtrack is fucking awful, to the point where it damages the show.

The cover of Heroes at the end of episode three nearly ruined it for me, and then the next episode dropped Aodpgere by Joy Division but in a ham-fisted and inappropriate way. Especially annoying because most of the media it's refetencing had an orchestral score, whereas Stranger Things has someone playing shit synth filler tracks from the soundtrack to Planes, Trains and Automobiles.
