I have them on my computer, waiting to be watched.

How should I go about this?

I want to understand this component of our culture.

If you can get the non-Special Edition versions of the originals, definitely watch those.

I hear there's a DVD set now that has them as an extra.
(I own ones that are ripped from laserdiscs)

I voted that you should skip the prequels, but it really depends how you feel.
I bet you'll walk away from the other trilogy wanting to watch at least one prequel, and then you'll possibly wish you hadn't (especially if it's the first).
But really, the prequels aren't unbearable. I could even write a list of what's great about them. They just struggle to be enjoyable as a whole.

Maybe just watch the (2D) Clone Wars cartoons instead.

I put other; I would suggest this order: 4 5 1 2 3 6

The reason behind this (yoinked from imdb) is that it gives you the most out of the plot twists and the like. Sure, you know that Darth Vader is Luke's father, but this order makes the reveal more dramatic.

Basically, it starts out from Luke's perspective, going through etc. etc., "No, I'm your father," flashback to his childhood and early adulthood, back to the end of the story.

Also the prequels really aren't that bad. Attack of the Clones is painful most of the time, but Phantom Menace (as I remember) is a decent popcorn flick and Revenge of the Sith does a nice job tying things up.

Watch 4 through 6, then 1 through 3. Like everyone else.

I like the prequels, actually. They just aren't the same kind of movie

That way you get the authentic experience

Except of course for all the CG stuff that Lucas inserted into the original trilogy decades later.

the original Star Wars is really good because it tells you a miraculous story in a style (an)akin to that of japanese period films and western world war 2 action movies. But told with the newest technology at hand used by very creative people who obviously knew in their guts what makes a film cool. I think this is very rare in todays movie making. Last film i remember doing that for me was Children of Men.
The new trilogy destroyed everything the old Star Wars was. But it is a nice film on it's own if you have nothing better to do. Ok it's not but i watched it...

Really the only thing that is bad about the prequels is Hayden Christiansen's laughably-horrible acting. And to be fair his character was written awkward as all fucking hell.

Do either what scubagoomba said or else 456123.

Do not watch the prequels. Any good in them is far outweighed by the terrible.

Well actually I guess, if you do not want to be a person who likes Star Wars, watch the prequels.

you have 4 and 6 switched around on your best-worst thing
and while 2 has the lowest lows, it also has higher highs than 1 (re: I like Detective Kenobi)

anyway start with the originals. the thing scubagoomba said also doesn't sound bad

Okay so I guess I'll do the ScubaGoomba thing, or at least I'll intend to. I'll set a threshold of enjoyment defined by, I don't know, Die Hard 2, that if the first two movies don't surpass, I'll just watch 6 and wash my hands of the whole experience.

Thanks for the input, everyone! I hope the versions I have aren't all retconned and CGIed, but I have a bad feeling.

2 also has the best unintentionally hilarious stuff. Hayden Christensen at his best. 1 is mostly forgettable.

I should mention, I actually have seen 2. I saw it in theaters. Some friends and I were going to the movies, one of them wanted to see The Fellowship of the Ring, but another one said, seemingly without irony, "No, let's not see that nerd movie, let's go see Star Wars!" and we went, and I watched it, but I don't remember anything about it other than, at the time, I believed it to have the worst dialogue I had ever heard outside of improv comedy.

Just going to amend my statement about the prequels to "I like them other than Christensen's terrible acting/dialogue"

I've actually never understood why that part's a big beef for everyone.
I was typing out more details of my opinions, but I don't want to spoil something (MiШA) has seen but forgotten.

There's a second gay robot behind the well-known gay robot, and the little squeaky robot is even gayer.

The white frogmen are shooting the helmet people, but it's not evil because the helmet people are shooting back. All these lasers must have been pretty exciting in the 70s.

The robots just totally ditched Princess Leia. I thought they were on her side. Political intrigue!

Oh okay it was all part of her plan. Now the robots are in Saudi Arabia, which I guess is good, because there's oil there or something.

Okay, I'm just going to add to this post from now on.

The robots just decided to separate, which I don't think is a good idea in the desert. The robots are kind of dumb. Just another example of mid-seventies homophobia. I just watched Dog Day Afternoon the other day. I kind of miss that movie. Oh look, are these Ewoks? They're small and cute and stuff. Those are Ewoks, right? It's a really cute word. They stole the little squeaky robot. Oh, they collect them!

Is that Johnny 5?! I thought he was dead!

Oh wow, that is not a puppet dinosaur. That dinosaur is made of computer. How disappointing. Should I just stop the movie now?

No, this is the creator's vision or something. Florescent Lightbulb Robot! Rolling Black Dome Robot!

Luke is very whiny, moreso than the tiny robot, which I think is pretty impressive. Good job, Luke. You're the whiniest in the series so far. But somehow, I don't think you're going to win by the time I'm done with them.

"Oh are you in the rebellion against the Empire? That's great!"

Looks like the little robot is a better liar than the big one.

Nobody likes the little squeaky robot.

Did they just refer to Obi-Wan Kenobi as a crazy old Wizard? I didn't think there were wizards in this mythology, but I guess I have a lot to learn.
