And got a commercial for a reprint of the old Dungeons & Dragons red box from the 1980s. This has really given me an uncomfortable amount of stuff to think about.

I had to login too because of mature content so Hulu definitely knew who I was.

Was it a reprint? I thought it was modeled after the original but was a new product based on the fourth edition rules.

Man it's nothing to do with details, they're pretty different games. In 4th edition they added this whole powers system that changed the game a lot and made wizards feel less special. You show it to a dude who witnessed a D&D game once in the 80s and they'll know the difference immediately.

Sure, but I mean that a true nerd would know the difference simply by reading a description of the commercial that somebody posted on a messageboard. Someone like me -- I wouldn't know until I got home and opened up the box.

4E is actually probably a better jumping-in point for old-schoolers than the previous two editions, if I understand correctly.

I mean, obviously the rules are very different, but it brings the game back to its original emphasis on miniatures combat, stripping out pretty much everything that isn't about killing things and taking their stuff.

I imagine that it is a game that is more in-line with what old-school players are expecting than third edition was, and presumably players who are mostly interested in dungeon crawling will think that it is a good thing that 4E smooths out the unbalance between classes.

ehhh the idea that 4e 'strips out everything that isn't about killing things' is really a myth created by people who haven't actually read the books. it's not really any more or less combat focussed than 3.5 or any other edition of D&D and it certainly doesn't include any less rules for non-combat stuff than 3.5
