bump

season 5 finale was pretty disappointing amirite yall?

not that it was

a bad ep

just that the previous one was way more of a "season finale" kind of ep

although pete campbell did get punched twice in this one, that owned

I don't know about Mad Men. Most of the story lines stand on their own and are fairly short. No problem seems to really affect the characters for a longer period of time.
For the rest, I guess it's mostly "omg I wish I could look like those people look/do what those people were allowed to do".

It's enjoyable enough to watch, but not enjoyable enough to love.

huh! i don't really see it that way at all.

if anything i feel like the problems the characters do face are sort of perpetually present

even though 90% of the time they may be outwardly ignoring/refusing to address them

don is always so close to being ready to pull the plug and start everything over again, you know? like, in this season everything in his life was perfect for two seconds and now he's mired in doubt that he's not allowing himself to acknowledge and he's back to all the dark parts of his past

pete campbell is just an empty evil person who can't stop himself from seeking conquest in every single situation and can't cope when he doesn't succeed

etc etc

the more time i spend with mad men the less i find the universe at all appealing in an escapist way

like

at first my feeling was v. much "oh man a lot of these people are really repugnant but look at all the neat stuff going on around them"

but now i feel that the entire environment is completely filled with dread

You're right, their personalities are always present, and cause their constant problems. But the problems themselves are nearly always solved in two episodes. I would like for it to be bigger, somehow.

I only watched the first 3 seasons btw.

I think Matthew Weiner said in an interview that the second-to-last episode was the climax of the series, and the finale was more of falling action type stuff. I feel like a lot of people were expecting more actual plot stuff to happen, like in the season 3 finale, which is always a dangerous thing to expect from a Mad Men episode.

only thing I didn't care for was how far they pushed Adam's ghost, where he's in the dentist office basically writing "HEY, GUILT. GET IT???" on a blackboard and underlining it a bunch. I liked the idea of Don hallucinating him and I'm fine with the toothache metaphor, but I preferred leaving it unspoken. other than that, I liked it just fine

white people are still as racist and sexist and terrible. the style gets boring after two episodes. add in being better cast than acted and all the tv tropes and cliches, and it's just a soap for people too pretentious to like neighbours.
